Week 03: Research Task

Analyse a piece of information design and consider its effectiveness at presenting complex data in way which is easy to digest.

Consider clarity, communication, structure and form. Be precise and write a critical outline of this piece of work.

Week 03: Workshop challenge -
Infographics and how to digest complex graphics

This week is all about how we design complex information for visibility and legibility. To find examples of great use of putting this to practice, I visited the old faithful Design Week website and found some of the WINNERS 2023 work on their best use of data.

We transfer
WeTransfer's annual Ideas Report stands as a great example of analysing the complexities of the creative workforce. Through its interviews with 6,500 creatives across 180 nations, this report showcases graphics that are easy to understand and visually appealing.

The judges said: “Beautifully designed with useful insights and
content, clearly laid out and communicated to create an engaging
experience. Brilliant UI.”

Westminster Accounts:

The Westminster Accounts by Sky News is a tool open to the public, showing how much money members of Parliament have earned above their normal pay since the last election, their declared donations, and more. The database has over 650,000 entries from official sources detailing political earnings and donations. This tool consolidates facts and figures from various websites, making them easily accessible to everyone. It has the potential to influence the political scene.

Examining an example of presenting data

I found this fantastic data visualisation on the Design Council website about mapping London's Design Economy, taken from The LDF 2022.

Of course, it is hard to be critical when it’s on the Design Council website. It’s obviously going to be a great example, but it clearly shows how the Design Economy is spread across London, with a breakdown of the complex data by colour coding, shape size and mapping.
