What’s in a name?
A change of direction - & rethink of the app name

While testing my app with my focus group, something about the logo bothered me. I have always referred to the app name as ‘Conscious Community’. However, I felt there was a missing link in the name, namely, the use of the app to fill up your water bottle rather than using single-use plastics. I also was concerned that the name was too serious for the Gen Z target audience. I also had to bear in mind that this logo was predominantly seen on phone screens, and I felt ‘conscious commmunity’ was too long to fit across the width of a screen without being reduced to quite small, making the text illegible. So, I needed to come up with a solution, relatively quickly, with looming deadlines. I looked at variable designs to refine the logo. One solution was by the ‘Cs’ in Conscious Community to make a monogram-style logo. However, when I positioned the ‘C’ typefaces, I felt that they all looked like imperfect Chanel replicas, which is not the look I was trying to achieve.

I looked at my phone for the apps that stood out visually the best and realised the most effective ones were incredibly simple. So 3-4 weeks before the final deadline, I revised the name to a more concise name, which would:
a. Work well as a simplified icon within the app
b. Appeal to my target audience
c. Link more towards the water element that my project is about

After a quick brainstorming session to get some ideas on paper, I returned to the subject of what I wanted the user to do with the app. That was refilling their water bottles, overbuying, and using single-use plastics. Therefore I return to the word ‘Refill’
and had a play with words.

I settled
on Refillr - As I thought the community could be referred to as ‘Refillrs’ similar to one of my favourite apps Waze, where the contributors to traffic updates are referred to as Wazers.

To ensure I wasn't making assumptions and stereotypes, I ran it past a trusted fellow student, Bex, who is considerably closer to my demographic age. She agreed, this was a much better approach. Now I just had to set about changing it on everything!

Research - Brands that resonate with my target audience.
