Big Scale Art and Interview - Workshop led by Maggie Slabon
On a cold, soggy November, I attended a Project Mapping workshop in the car park of a Buddhist Temple in Crawley. This was the final part of the Lighting part of my project and I was hoping to add the aspect in the project as a visual reward for Refillrs at the end of the month of using the drinking water fountain. I had booked an appointment months in advance, not knowing what to expect and how much time I’d be given in creating the large-scale art on an iPad, which was then projected large scale.
It was an incredible experience to finally try Projection Mapping on a big screen (or building wall, as was the case) led by specialist Maggie Slabon. This technique uses live-feed cameras and simple controls, and I had the chance to create and manipulate my visuals in real time while discussing with Maggie my work and what I was trying to create. Explaining the technique in detail and the equipment needed for a set-up like the workshop had, it quickly became apparent that this technique was only viable on a short-term basis.
This would work for short, visual gains, to catch the attention possibly at the launch of my app, or to celebrate a milestone use of plastic bottles but was not possible to use as a permanent feature. Undeterred, I created an animated gif to show how I thought the fountain would look if there was a chance to use projection mapping on it.
Morag Myerscough, eat your heart out!
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the projection mapping I had hoped to create, but it was a good compromise. This features as a community incentive reward for frequent use.
