Message Delivered | Message and Medium, Pencil, Pixel, Performance, Packaging
This project explores the arena in which the message is deployed, from the printed page to the interactive screen, from 3D form to environmental installation. You will also begin to address how we ‘understand’ these messages and the symbolism and semiotics that allow us both to ‘read’ but also engineer communications today, both for the familiar and the new. The outcome will see you create a message in response to an issue or cause revealed, and promote in an appropriate medium.
This weeks lecture/podcast - Form and Function, Susanna Edwards and Sam Winston
Sam talks about how he would approach a project from the initial briefing, what materials he would use, to how the audience will interact with the end product and how they consume information and find interesting ways to get their behaviour to be part of the project.
Read | Watch | Listen - The Solar Annual Report
This week’s short video showcased The Solar Annual Report. This is the first Annual Report, powered by the sun, with its content remaining invisible until the sunlight falls on its pages. Created by the Serviceplan Group and thanks to a special printing process made with photochromic inks. The photochromic dyes exhibit a colour once exposed to UV wavelengths.
This is a truly stunning piece of work that instantly makes you want to be a better designer!
Read | Watch | Listen - Rain of Terror
The second example this week was a campaign from 1990 by Friends of the Earth, which shows a billboard made out of litmus paper, and when acid rain falls, it starts to turn red, like blood. Again another creative message using a visual medium to create a message.
Question: How can a message be enhanced through the medium in which it is implemented?
I think these were great examples to show ink and paper are not the only solution to get a message across and capture the audiences attention. It made me research other ways I could communicate.
These include:
Large billboards - Incredibly effective because they are visible to a large number of people and can be seen from a distance especially if placed in key locations - Capital city, Road junctions.
Product placement - A great form of advertising where products are featured prominently in movies, TV shows, or other forms of media. This can be a powerful way to get the message across because it can create an emotional connection with the audience.
Sponsorships and partnerships - Sponsor at events, teams, or individuals to promote their brand. This can be an effective way to reach a specific target audience and create a positive association with the brand.
Guerilla marketing - This is a creative and unconventional form of advertising that aims to capture the attention of the audience in unexpected ways. Examples include flash mobs, graffiti, and viral marketing campaigns.
Overall, there are many different ways that companies can advertise their products and services. The most effective method will depend on the target audience, the message being conveyed, and the budget available. I think the key factor is to make it a talking piece, annd create something that isn’t the norm.
